In the days of big fruit blockbusters it’s sometimes a delight to drink a wine which is true to its roots. This terrific Malbec is old-school, and a little bit more earthy and primal than some of its route 1 fruit-bomb New World cousins. In the 18th century Malbec was nicknamed the ‘Black Wine of Cahors’ and this one really is black hole dark, but it’s packed with fabulous blackcurrant and redcurrant aroma with just a whiff of black olive. Take a glug and you’ve got to love that crisp acidity and, yes, there’s no other way to say it, earthy minerality. Give it a try, and make sure rare slices of roast beef are on the menu.
Wine of France, Powerful and fruity
Inky dark, very earthy but beautifully graceful French dry red. Bags of fruit but balanced with lovely earthy warmth. Terrific winter night wine, and just gorgeous paired up with roast beef or a big warming beef stew.
